Tuskegee University Students Participate in Summer Study Abroad Progam

tuskegee-06-2015Under the leadership of Thierno Thiam, Special Advisor to the President for Global Initiatives, six Tuskegee University students participated in a summer study abroad at AME University.

Tuskegee also presented an architect curriculum for consideration to UL entitled “The Education of the Liberian Architect”, which will be reviewed for opportunities moving forward.

Carter Center assists Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare

carter-center-06-2015Over the past 10-years, the Carter has worked with the Government of Liberia and in 2005, launched the Carter Center’s Mental Health Program in Liberia.

During this time, they have trained 150 specialized nurses and physician assistants and 300 other mental health professionals, such as community mental health workers, assisting the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in establishing and implementing its National Mental Health Policy and creating anti-stigma campaigns nationwide to improve public understanding of mental illnesses.

Under the leadership of Dr. Tom Borneman at the Carter Center, Tom Crick and Dr. Janice Cooper and her staff in Liberia, the mental health program is making a significant impact on the country. Tom Crick, Associate Director at the Carter Center provides leadership to the Access for Justice Program and other initiatives. Many thanks to the Carter Center and Tom Crick for providing support of the Tri-Nation Ebola Fundraising event held at the Carter Center earlier in the year.

North Dakota State University signs MOUs with 5 Liberian Colleges and Universities

north-dakota-06-2015Eveadean M. Myers, J.D., Vice President Equity, Diversity, and Global Outreach at North Dakota State University (NKS) signed MOUs with Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Bong Community Colleges, African Bible College University and United Methodist University in Monrovia.

North Dakota State University joins the UCL as a member institution with a focus on agriculture and are exploring a partnership with the University of Liberia.

Myers said “the intent of the agreement is to build academic capacities of Liberian students, faculty, colleges and universities.”

GSU Launches an All Children Reading program for Liberia

Under the leadership of Dr. Gwen Benson, the Georgia State University (GSU) College of Education in partnership with a Global NGO in Monrovia, Liberia proposed to launch an All Children Reading site at two schools in Liberia, West Africa, one a co-educational K-12 private school and the other a K-12 private institution for girls. Both schools include a representative cross-section of indigenous groups in Liberia.

The proposed All Children Reading project, Promoting Early Achievement in Reading for Liberia (Project PEARL), will provide cutting edge reading strategies through technology-based innovation in the form of interactive learning video presentations (DVDs) alongside companion education kits (training materials and workbooks) that are grounded in current best practices for early reading instruction as well as designed to keep students highly engaged and excited about reading.

Emory University hosts Dr. Emmet Dennis the President of the University of Liberia

emory-06-2015Sita Ranchod-Nilsson, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Developing Nations at Emory University, hosted Dr. Emmet Dennis, President of the University of Liberia at her home to re-establish ties with UL. In addition to the UCL President Cynthia Blandford, President Dr. Jabari Simama of Georgia Piedmont Technical College, Georgia Tech’s Michael Best, Clark Atlanta University’s Dr. Carlton Brown, and others were present to welcome the President to Atlanta.

Thanks also to the leadership of Courtenay Dusenbury, MPH, Director and Secretariat at Emory University International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), due to the Ebola Crisis, Emory’s International Association of National Public Health Institutes MOU with the Minister of Health will be realigned with the current needs of the country.

Emory University, under the leadership of Dr. David Nugent, Director, Master’s in Development Practice Program, and the Masters in Development Practice students have agreed to provide the Cox Ballroom at Emory University for the UCL Fundraising Event to be held September 26, 2015. Emory students are also preparing Post-Ebola Concept Notes to include Orphans, Sustainable Agriculture, and Entrepreneurship Center, and Water & Sanitation and will present their papers before the end of May on the campus of Emory University.

Emory University also invited Fatu Kakula, Liberian shero who helped to save the lives of her family members who had contracted Ebola, to study nursing at Emory University for one-year.
