Scholarships

The University Consortium for Liberia (UCL) Scholarship Program was established in 2015 by the UCL Board of Directors. A special scholarship was established on behalf of Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, in dedication of his support to educate our youth. The UCL Scholarship program is open to Liberian students and/or students of Liberian decent pursuing a post-secondary education at a U.S. College or University. Priority will be given to students applying to a UCL college/university noted below who are considered Institutional Partners.

The UCL Scholarship for Experiential Learning, Study Abroad, and Faculty and Student Exchange programs will be announced at a later date, pursuant to funding availability.

Applicants must meet the criteria below:

Higher Education

Scholarship Amount: $500 – $1,000 to eligible candidates.

UCL Scholarship Application Deadline – March 27, 2017  New Deadline – April 10, 2017

  • The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into an academic program of study pursuing an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. program
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Field of Study: Any Field of Study
  • Complete the UCL Scholarship Application
  • Provide 2 letters of Recommendation from any of the following: College Professor, Community Member/Faith Leader, Current/Former Employer or Government Leader. Your letter(s) of recommendation should address Leadership Abilities and Potential. Letters of Recommendation should be e-mailed by recommendation person to UCLSCHOLARSHIP@GMAIL.COM with their name, contact info, the students name, and the students school. The subject line should be, “Student Name” Reference Letter.
  • Scholarship recipients who received a scholarship in the previous year, can apply annually
  • Copy of Passport must accompany application for international students and identify what type of visa you currently have or will be applying for

Programmatic Groups: Study Abroad, Service Learning, Student Exchange

UCL Scholarship Application Deadline – (TBD)

  • The applicant will participate in a study abroad program, service learning or student exchange program in the United States or the Republic of Liberia.
  • Nationals and Residents of the United States must plan to study in the Republic of Liberia and the Residents and Nationals of the Republic of Liberia must plan to study in the United States for a minimum of 10 days.
  • UCL Faculty and staff can apply and must submit a 2-page proposal describing the benefit to UCL
  • Complete the UCL Scholarship Application
  • Provide 2 letters of Recommendation from any of the following: College Professor, Community Member/Faith Leader, Current/Former Employer or Government Leader. Your letter(s) of recommendation should address Leadership Abilities and Potential. Letters of Recommendation should be e-mailed by recommendation person to UCLSCHOLARSHIP@GMAIL.COM with their name, contact info, the students name, and the students school. The subject line should be, “Student Name” Reference Letter.

Student Government Association
Experiential Learning

Scholarship Amount: (TBD)

UCL Scholarship Application Deadline – (TBD)

  • The applicant will participate in an Experiential Learning program in the U.S. or Liberia for a minimum of 10-days. Students involved in Student Government Associations are given priority consideration.
  • Must be in good academic standing at an UCL Membership Institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Students must complete the UCL Student Government/Experiential Learning application and submit a 400-500 Word original essay.

“Describe an experience from your past that greatly impacted your life. How did this occurrence shape the person you are today? What expectations do you have for your experience abroad and in what way do you think this experience will affect your personal and professional life.”

  • Must submit a letter of introduction and recommendation from the University President, Faculty or staff. Your letter(s) of recommendation should address Leadership Abilities and Potential.
