UGA partners with Liberian Ministry of Agriculture and UL on Poultry Production Project

uga-poultry-06-2015In collaboration with the University of Liberia (UL) and the Ministry of Agriculture, under the leadership of Dean Scott Angel, University of Georgia (UGA) presented a Letter of lnterest regarding the launching of a poultry production program in Liberia.

UGA’s expertise in the areas of poultry and meat production and their interest to help increase and improve poultry production in traditional “village” systems while also working to encourage and enhance more modern commercial models, is an important partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and other partners.

UL has identified land and other resources that will be leveraged on behalf of the partnership and have the support of the various UL faculty and staff to help move this exciting project forward. The specific land is located at Fendall and valued at S10,000.

Collectively, the team will work with UGA and the Ministry of Agriculture to identify funding resources to support this endeavor with the Government of Liberia, the private sector, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), World Bank, USAID, and others to help with the establishment of breeder flocks, hatcheries, grow out capabilities, processing and marketing. Mohammed Massaquoi, UGA alumni and retired NFL football player will serve as an Honorary Chair for the September UCL fundraiser at Emory University September 26, 2015.

Savannah State University signs MOU with University of Liberia

savanah-state-05-2015President Dr. Cheryl Dozier of Savannah State University (SSU) has agreed to serve as the Honorary Chair of the UCL beginning June 2015. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of Liberia’s President Emmet Dennis and SSU’s President Dr. Dozier last year where both institutions will make every reasonable effort to encourage direct contact, educational and research cooperation between their constituents, including students, faculty, departments and research centers/institutes.

In Liberia, Dr. Dozier and a delegation of SSU professors will meet with academic and governmental officials. The delegation included Dr. Deloach, Terri Clay and Norbert Chandler, assistant professors in the Homeland Security and Emergency Management degree program and Dr. Samuel Dolo, professor of mathematics. Dr. Dozier and her SSU faculty also had the opportunity to meet with President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during her visit SSU also provided a scholarship to Randal Glee, a graduate from the UL, to work towards his Masters in Social Work at SSU.

SSU also presented the opportunity to host the 1st International Model African Union Conference in Liberia, however, due to the Ebola crisis, the event was postponed.

CAU Host International Conference on Education and Industry in Liberia

Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has provided tremendous leadership in the development of their relationship with the Republic of Liberia. They hosted an international conference on Education and Industry in Liberia where over 200 participated along with seven college presidents from Liberia, including President Brown from CAU and four members of their faculty. Industry experts included Delta Air Lines, the Coca-Cola Bottlers, Mittal Steel, Firestone, Sime Darby and others discussing how industry and academic should work more closely together to help prepare the workforce of tomorrow. CAU and UL also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to demonstrate their commitment moving forward.

As a UCL member school, CAU also provided 2 full-time academic scholarships to Saki Golafale and Varbah Sorsor, graduates of the University of Liberia to attend CAU on a Masters Degree program in Chemistry. Students have maintained a 3.0 and above GPA and are seeking support toward their PhD program before returning to Liberia. The UCL leadership is also working with CAU and the University of Liberia (UL) to establish a world-class science and laboratory program at UL and is currently establishing an international advisory committee to provide resources and support. CAU also hosted the Liberian Embassy staff at a UCL luncheon and later hosted the Liberian Ambassador to the U.S. Jeremiah Sulunteh at CAU to further discussions on how to strengthen relationships between CAU and Liberia.

Georgia Gwinnett College joins the UCL

Under the leadership of Lois C. Richardson Ph.D., Senior Vice President/Provost (acting,) Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) joined the UCL as a member school. Ambassador Jeremiah Sulunteh, the Liberian Ambassador to the U.S. was the Commencement Speaker on May 14, 2015.

On-going discussions are underway with GGC to further define the UL relationship moving forward, including study abroad and student exchange.

Georgia Tech signs Memorandum of Understanding UCL

ga-tech-06-2015Yves Berthelot, Vice President for International Initiatives at Georgia Tech, and Pierre King, the Deputy Chair of the Liberian Telecommunication Corp (LibTelCo), joined Ms. Blandford in signing the Memorandum of Understanding.

The Memorandum states that the work of Dr. Michael Best in Liberia is to continue including training of government officials, advisory research and the establishment of a center of excellence on information and communication technologies and development. Georgia Tech will assist LibTelCo, the national communications operator in the development of the country’s broadband information technology network.
